Winter January 2026

FROM THE BOARD

Hello and Happy New Year to our Desert Aire community!
Your Board has officially accepted the resignation of Steve Nuce at our January Board meeting. We would all like to thank Steve for his volunteerism and time spent on your BOD and as Board liaison to the Safety and Security Committee! We now have an open position on our BOD which we would like to appoint another volunteer who shares our love for the greater good of Desert Aire! Please submit your application to the office by February 15th to [email protected]. Our transition from Port of Quincey Security Services to Capstone Security Service was also approved at our latest Jan BOD meeting after analyzing two very qualified companies. Capstone was able to meet our financial limitations of our security assessments and will be starting patrols in DA logo vehicles upon final legal review of their contract.
We now have our new traffic cameras installed and operational at all three entrances! Access to this system is VERY limited currently as we learn how best to use this security and safety tool to keep DA as safe as possible! We will continue to learn what the system offers and will be giving updates at the Safety and Security Committee meetings and BOD meetings. Use of the driving range was approved again this year for the commercial fireworks show on the 4th of July. The donations received to date by the DA FIREWORKS FUN grassroots group are much appreciated and please consider donating to the show to keep DA safe and to help us celebrate our nation’s 250th anniversary!! The QR codes on the mailbox bulletin board and our office can also accept your checks made to DA FIREWORKS FUND!
As always, we thank you for your participation in meetings, committees, events and donations to help DA continue to be an amazing place to work, play and live! Please email us at [email protected] with any questions or feedback!

Sincerely submitted by your Board of Directors,
Darci Ulin, Matt Yanak, Keith Savinsky and Mark Pierce…and hopefully one more of you!!

From the GENERAL MANAGER’s Desk - James Curdy

Happy New Year! January hasn’t brought much for winter yet but perhaps it’s coming.
In our business office we will soon be looking for a Receptionist as Jesenia is transitioning to the Accounts Payable position. She has been training for the past couple of months and is doing a good job juggling both duties while traffic through the office is light.

Annual SPRING CLEANUP is tentatively planned for Friday, April 24th starting at 9:00 am. It’s a good time to help clean up our community and get a free pair of Desert Aire Logo leather gloves. Volunteers will be provided with bags and afterwards, lunch and a coupon to dump personal garbage a day early (Friday) instead of waiting in line Saturday or Sunday.
On Saturday, April 25th we will again have the SHRED event in the Clubhouse Lobby but more to come on this part.
Our Code Compliance Specialist and the Architectural Committee have continued to work with members helping them get projects approved or come into compliance whichever the case.

Greenbelt/common area encroachments is ongoing, with the next focus being on Golf Course access points across Greenbelt areas. Some are licensed or were in the past by previous owners and others have never been. Our goal is to get everyone current and into compliance either by licensing or removing the violation.

Dog complaints continue and they will likely never go away because some owners just don’t take responsibility to contain them as a courtesy, if nothing else, to their neighbors. While the County has done away with Dog Licenses, the animal control ordinance still applies, and FINES are a part of the enforcement in Desert Aire.
MACC/911 has a new online reporting link for non-emergency matters. https://macc911.org/  it is the same as calling 888-431-9911.

PARKS & GREENBELTS
More cleaning will be done in greenbelts as we get further into winter. It works best when the ground is frozen but that may never happen this winter. If not, we will just continue and try to do minimal ground disturbances.
EXERCISE FACILITY
The new treadmill was a good addition but traffic has been lighter this year so far. Perhaps not many new years resolutions or the gym wasn’t a part of them. Our regulars continue to enjoy this nice facility that we continue to improve year over year.
GOLF COURSE
While the course is still open and seeing a good amount of play for the time of year, we are taking advantage of the good weather and doing a couple of projects that we typically can’t do this time of year. We are also working on increasing the food options available which we hope will improve the overall experience for players. More to come.

Watermaster Report – Chris Guillen
We are getting ready to replace the water main on Fowler Lane.  This work is upgrading the now 2-inch main to a 4-inch main.  The project will include digging in the new main and hooking up all the services from the old main to the new main line.  We will also be taking bacteriological sample and pressure testing the new main.  The next cul-de-sac on the schedule for 2027 is Brunner Lane.
The water system produced 291,737,877 gallons of water for 2025.  We installed 6 new meters, 3 pools were filled and 13 leaks were repaired.
If you are gone for an extended period of time the Water Department can shut off you water at the meter for $5.00, this will not stop pipes from breaking but it will not flood your home.
Just as a reminder, the water policy effective August 1st 2009, states members are not to access the meter boxes in any way or they will be subject to the enforcement mechanisms of the policy.
All samples taken have been good.  We are currently at 1,325 connections to the water system.  The total year to date gallons produced for the overall domestic water system is 1,802,141.

PRO SHOP NEWS – Kyle Preston, PGA Professional
The 2026 Season is here! We had a great year in 2025, and we all look forward to another great year here at Desert Aire. The weather has been awesome this winter and we have seen a lot of golfers out enjoying our beautiful course.
Our first tournament is swiftly approaching. We will be getting entry forms out soon for the 2026 Spring Best Ball. This is one of our most popular tournaments of the season. This is a 2 Day, 2 Person event open to anyone with an established USGA GHIN Handicap. Speaking of handicaps, if you have not yet paid your Men’s/Ladies Club dues, and your handicap fees make sure to do that soon. On the first of the year, anyone who has not yet paid has seen NH for their handicap on the USGA app. This means your handicap is not currently active. Don’t worry though, as soon as you pay and we get you reactivated, your handicap will pick up right where you left off.
Our simulator is still set up in the Clubhouse and open for bookings. It’s available in by the hour, or in 3-hour time slots from 8:00 am-4:00 pm. If you want to utilize it outside of the regular hours, you can contact Kyle Preston at the Pro Shop to schedule something after hours. The weather has been so nice that there hasn’t been much need to play golf inside, but keep in mind that you can do specialized practice and even take lessons inside during these colder times. The Garmin R50 provides 20 different units of measurement with each shot to let you dial in your swing and what changes will improve your game! For those just looking to have fun, you can also play golf at over 2k different courses including fantasy and par 3 courses or play fun competitions on the range.
We have worked over the last couple months on separating regular balls and range balls. Over half of the balls on the range were regular balls. We have separated those out and would ask that any balls hit on the range are only balls from our range machine. This helps us maintain the quality of the balls cycling through our range machine and being distributed to our members and guests.
We will be announcing the details of our next Cart Auction coming up later this spring, so keep an eye out for that in our next Newsletter!
We hope to see you all out playing soon!

Golf Course SUPERINTENDENT Report – Shawn Hocking
Winter? I am sure it will get here, but right now, it has been warmer than usual. This warm weather has given us the opportunity to continue with projects that I didn’t expect to begin until spring.
We have been working in several areas around Desert Aire. We have installed lighting in the Clubhouse parking lot and solar lighting in the park parking lot. The parking stops have been pinned down at the park, and we have more parking stops to install as our time permits. We edged and regraveled the Helipad, and along the Airport plums and roses but need to finish with some landscape rock as availability allows.
Projects and maintenance on the golf course this winter have included: the restroom doors have been replaced and programable locks have been installed on the driving range and back nine restrooms, and we have done some irrigation and sod work, and regraveled a few maintenance paths. Since we have had an open winter, we have continued to perform tasks like mowing greens
Due to the winter, our scheduled greenbelt cleanup began this month rather than in December. We are methodically working through the Desert Aire properties, so please be patient because all areas will be visited within time. Most likely we will be working on the greenbelts through February.
One of our big projects that we are trying to accomplish, while the weather allows, is to rebuild the number 16 tees. If we can do this now and get sod, it will be back in play much earlier in the season. Obviously, we would like it back in play as soon as we possibly can and are working toward that goal. It has been a full and busy winter so far and I don’t think the pace will stop before spring.

Communication Committee—Darci Ulin
Your Communications Committee is back at it in 2026 to help bring you a multi-platform communications plan to reach as many of you as possible in DAOA! We will continue share information; posting hard copies of communications on our mailbox bulletin boards, flyers in the Clubhouse and Pro Shop, and during our committee meetings and Board meetings! We will be adding more events and other current information on our DAOA Facebook page this year, as well as the DAOA member side calendar of events with links to enhanced details of the related event! As always, we are striving to keep the DAOA website the truest source of DAOA information, so please check often for key communications, meeting minutes, documents and governing documents.

We will be having two Golf Cart Poker Runs one each on Memorial Day and adding Labor Day weekends! There will be music, food trucks, soccer, volleyball and 3:3 basketball tournaments for $5/team registration, free corn hole tournaments! Please check the calendar on DAOA website on the member-login to access the event calendar for more details! Please consider donating to the commercial fireworks fund to bring another amazing and safe display back to Desert Aire for our 250th Independence Day celebration!!

Expect to see more improvements on the way in 2026. The mild winter has given us the opportunity to undertake some needed changes.  The Golf Improvement Fund has successfully funded and completed the security doors on our bathrooms. If you have ideas or recommendations regarding golf course improvements, please contact one of our members. Welcome to the 2026 golf season!
Kyle Patrick, Chair; Wendy Knopp, Secretary and Country Club representative; Dave Hartnett, Men’s Club representative; Marcia Bartlett, Ladies Club representative; Kevin Anderson, Leslie Savisky, Suzanne Yanak at-large

Architectural Committee—Pedro Hernandez
Architectural application changes: The Architectural Committee (AC) will review and make recommendations to the Board of Directors to approve. The wait for Board approval will extend the wait time for approval significantly. We can’t change this going forward because we have to work within the law. The importance of having a complete and accurate application submitted prior to being sent to the Board for approval will, hopefully, mitigate the time it takes for approval.
We hope the transition to the new way of conducting our meetings, both committee and regular, will go smoothly. We also understand that some may have difficulties with the time change of the meetings, but we’re being absolutely clear that the changes are beyond our control. We hope everyone understands and can adapt along with us as we move forward.

Security and Safety Committee—Matt Yanak
You may want to consider enrolling in Life Flight Services since DA is at least an hour from any emergency room. With the airport in the community, it could make a huge difference in critical health issues. Covers household for $85 a year and there may be cost savings though the Sagebrush Senior Center.
A Security Patrol contract was approved by the HOA Board during the January Board meeting with Capstone Security and Investigations LLC. The contract is very similar to the previous one with Port of Quincy rates, use of DA truck, phone and hours reflect no change. Patrols will start again beginning of February.

Village Extras!!

Lots of activities are going on at Desert Aire.  This new feature highlights these going-ons that are of interest to our owners.

Country Club Happenings

Something just a little bit different.  If you would like to join its $25 per year and you will receive a reduced rate to all our events.  Everyone is welcome so come on out and meet new people and join in the fun.
Saturday partnership with the Sagebrush Senior Center we will be having our St. Patrick’s Day Celebration. Details to follow. Everybody is welcome and its free! It always has great food and fun prizes.

Winter Trivia

Question: When does winter officially start?
Answer: The winter solstice, which is the shortest day of the year, marks the start of winter. It’s typically Dec. 21, but it can also fall between the 20th and 23rd, depending on the exact amount of time it takes the Earth to rotate around the sun that year.
Question: What qualifies as a blizzard?

Question: At what temperature does snow form?
Answer: 32 degrees Fahrenheit.
Question: At what age does it get more dangerous to shovel snow?
Answer: Those over 45 should be careful shoveling snow—especially dense, wet snowfall. The mixture of exertion and cold air can sometimes to lead to heart attacks, especially in those with high blood pressure or other cardiac issues.
Question: When was snowboarding invented?
Answer: In 1965, when Michigan engineer Sherman Poppen invented the first snowboard by attaching two skis together.
Question: Which winter sport is the most dangerous for the average person?
